Week Ten of Friday Night Huddle: Cox prevails in a thrilling match against Kempsville, while Maury tampers with Churchland

Maury has shutout their opponents in the last 4 weeks and scored at least 80 points in each one of those games.

NORFOLK, Va. — Coming into Friday's high school football action, it was well known that Maury hadn't lost a game in the Eastern District. After all, they're undefeated overall and are winning games regularly by 70-80 points.

Slightly less common knowledge, they weren't alone in their District clean sheet. The Churchland Truckers were winners of 4 straight and tied with Maury atop the Eastern. This is all despite the departure of do everything Brandyn Hillman to the University of Michigan. With one of the best players in program history gone to the Big Ten, most expected Churchland to struggle.

They've certainly exceeded expectations, but even Hillman's Truckers hadn't been able to overcome the Maury Commodores in the last few years. That trend continued tonight.

Maury looked, well, exactly how they've looked all season. The Commodores led just 13-0 at the end of the first quarter, but that ballooned to 55-0 by halftime. Commodore quarterback AuTori Newkirk was steady as usual, rushing and throwing for scores. Melvin Lowe rushed for multiple touchdowns as well and the Maury defensive line was dominant for long stretches.

Churchland mounted a long drive into the red zone early in the first half, buoyed by a strong running game of their own. They were not able to capitalize, however, failing to convert on 4 chances from inside the ten-yard line. The Truckers remain formidable and will pursue a playoff spot with just one game remaining against Manor.

Maury, meanwhile, has outscored their opponents 312-0 over the course of the last 4 games, breaking 80 three times. They aren't likely to meet a true test until at least the Region finals and possibly beyond, if at any point at all.

In the Beach district, Cox and Kempsville played in a thrilling matchup that came down to the wire. In the first half, the Falcons were only able to put up a field goal. They trailed 14-3 heading into the second half but came out in the third quarter as a completely different team. They scored two consecutive touchdowns the second of which was when Tyree Jefferies ran in for the go-ahead score, going up 15-14.

Kempsville would immediately counter on the next drive when Sawyer Whitmore finds the end zone for a 3-yard score to put the Chiefs back in front 21-15. In the fourth, the Falcons were moving the ball, and after converting on a critical fourth down, quarterback Gage Trefry heaves one up 45 yards to Gerald Simmons to set up the game-winning score- Trefry scoring off a quarterback keeper with less than 2 minutes to play. Kempsville was unable to make anything happen on their final drive and Cox narrowly escapes over Kempsville 22-21. Three of the Falcons' last four wins have come by 3 points or less.

Green Run remained undefeated on the road at Tallwood getting out to a quick start thanks to Quran Reames- Jones rushing 9 yards for a 7-0 advantage. Tallwood responded on the ensuing drive when Jacob Rojas tosses one to Jordan Mitnaul to even it at 7, but from there it was all the Stallions. In the second quarter, K’Saan Farrar, who leads Hampton Roads in passing yards, finds Virginia Tech commit Keylen Adam, who leads the area in receiving yards for a 14-7 advantage. They did all the scoring from there going on to win it over Tallwood, 47-7.

It's been a rough up-and-down season for the Lake Taylor Titans but they had a chance to try and finish up their season strong as they faced Norcom. They led 20-6 at the half and got more in the third quarter when Jamir Sporty Freeman tosses one 17 yards to Elijah Washington, who makes an incredible catch as they went up 28-6. The Greyhounds soon respond though when Tyrell Grant Jr. goes in the air to Matthew Outten, an 87-yard score to get within 8, 28-20. But the Titans kept them at arm’s length. Freeman adds another connection to Washington and Lake Taylor wins it over Norcom 34-28.

It was smooth sailing for Granby at Manor on Friday night. Cameron Harris had a big interception for the Comets in the first quarter which set the tone early. In the second quarter, the offense took care of business. Christian Post threw one up to Eamon Cuffee 80 yards downfield and after a successful two-point conversion, the Comets were up 8-0. They would go on to win easily over Manor 30-8.

In Chesapeake, Indian River and Great Bridge went head to head. Tyler Allison found Anthony Morris to get the Braves going first. Their defense was stout, too. Trey Voskanyan intercepted a Great Bridge pass and took it 60 yards the other way and the Braves won it 33-13.

King’s Fork continued their undefeated season Friday night traveling to Deep Creek. They got out to a hot start leading 34-0 by the third quarter, but the Hornets were finally able to muster up something when Brock Hoffman connected with Alford Gill for their first score of the game. It was all King’s Fork the rest of the night, however. Darryl Wilson Jr. ran in for a score to put the Bulldogs ahead 41-7 and they’d roll to get the win over Deep Creek 48-7 improving to 9-0.
